Year

Employment Description

1964-1967

Three year course of sea training on HMS Conway.

1967-1973

Three year apprenticeship with Port Line on refrigerated / cargo passenger ships. then promoted to 3rd Mate.

I also worked for ACT containers in their early days

1973-1976

I worked for Salen Reefers as 3rd, then 2nd Mate until the company folded, then joined Fred Olsen, followed by Jebsens as 2nd Mate on bulk carriers.

1976-1978

I joined Red Funnel Ferries as chief officer/relief masteron their ro-ro ferries.

In 1977 I transferred to their fast passenger service commanding their passenger hydrofoils.

1978-1980

I joined Wimpey Marine as second mate, then mate on their Anchor handling supply vessels

 

1980-1987

I joined Stirling Shipping, who operated platform supply vessels in the North Sea

In 1982 I was promoted to Master

 

1987-1990

Transferred to diving support vessel, Sea Mussel, working for British Gas, Arco & Conoco

1990-1991

Transferred to the newly-acquired Morecambe Diver which was going on long term charter to British Gas in Morecambe Bay

1991-1994

Returned to Sea Mussel. She was acting as support vessel for a seismic survey project for Saipem in the Northern Adriatic, the charterers being Prakla Seismos.
After this project was completed the vessel went on charter to Eastport International, a subsidiary of Oceaneering, working with a Magellan 725 ROV recovering an airliner from deep water south west of Naples.


The operation was completed in September 1992. The vessel was then chartered by Marex inc. to recover artifacts from Titanic. Although the ship sat over the top of the wreck for two days, court action terminated the operation. After landing the ROV and charterers in the US, Sea Mussel returned to the UK and was sold.
I returned reluctantly to supply vessels in the North Sea but took voluntary redundancy at the beginning of 1994 to work freelance under the name of Pentland Marine

1994-1997

Worked for Sea Services, Malta as a master of a platform supply vessel on charter to British Gas in Tunisia.

I also worked for Sealion Shipping as master of a safety standby vessel and occasionally sailed as master of a small single screw survey tug owned by Atlantic Marine.


During 1996 I sailed as master of a diving support/ROV ship in the North Sea and Arabian Gulf. Since then worked again for Sea Services as master on their anchor/handling supply vessels.

1997-1999

I was master of Sea Serv 503 supporting the Zaafarana Oilfield in the Gulf of Suez.The ship's duties included fire-fighting and pollution control. The ship was fitted with a pusher bow and was used to berth and unberth tankers alongside an offshore FPSO.

1999-2000

Sailed as master on AHTS vessels supporting the jackup rig Trident 19 off the coast of Iran.

2001

2002

2003

2004

2001 started with a brief job as barge captain on a jackup drilling rig off Iran

This was followed by some towage in the Mediterranean.

After upgrading my certificate to STCW 95, I completed the summer season on "Princess Duda", a German coaster that has been converted to a yacht & used mainly for expedition diving.

I finished 2001 as master of an ROV mother ship on the Blue Stream Project, laying a gas pipeline across the Black Sea.

2002 started with a short job in the Persian Gulf as relief captain on a crew boat.

I spent most of September skippering Alevok - a 26 metre Turkish gulet on charter work in & around Malta, and helping to organise a re-enactment of Operation Pedestal (The Santa Marija Convoy) in Grand Harbour. This was the convoy that saved Malta during the war.

2003 started with another job for Sea Services in the Red Sea,
supporting The Zaafarana Field

This was followed by local charter work around Malta/Sicily

2004. After local charter work around Malta & the Pelagic Islands with Princess Duda, I went with her to Egypt for two months' work involving the underwater excavation of the ancient city of Heracleion, in Abu Qir Bay, just East of Alexandria, with a team led by Franck Goddio, the French underwater archaeologist.(visit www.underwaterdiscovery.org)

2005 continues with Princess Duda, around the Central Med, including a tech diving charter for Starfish Enterprise.

I am also doing occasional work for Alliance Cruises around Malta

2006                                        Occasional work with local passenger ships and part time captain of a private motor yacht based in Malta

                                                

 

The year ended with a further job with Princess Duda as guard boat for a seismic operation in the central Med.

This year I am concentrating more on the yacht business – guardiennage, delivery, boat salvage, diving services and charter work.

I have over 40 years experience handling small boats and have owned several, the current ones being a 32' Ketch which I sailed out to Malta in 1997 and a 32' twin screw motor yacht, both based in Malta.
I currently hold a British Worldwide Master's Cert: (<3000GT) (STCW 95), Maltese Master's Cert: Maltese Engineer's Cert: & a GMDSS general certificate. I also hold a British Yachtmaster`s certificate, fast rescue coxn`s certificate & I am a qualified scuba diver..
